Features that used to be reserved for $250 carbon-plated race shoes are trickling down into $140 to $180 daily trainers, and ATPU foam is one of the biggest reasons why.

Don't assume "foam" means the same thing it did a few years ago. Two shoes with similar price tags can feel dramatically different underfoot depending on whether they're built with EVA, PEBA, ATPU, or a blended midsole using more than one.

Try shoes in person when you can, especially across a foam transition. Energy return and ride feel are hard to judge from a spec sheet. A shoe that looks similar on paper to your current pair might feel completely different once you're actually running in it.

Durability still varies by formulation. Not all ATPU is created equal. Some blends prioritize bounce over longevity, so if you're putting in serious weekly mileage, ask specifically about expected midsole lifespan rather than assuming newer automatically means longer-lasting.

Expect prices to shift as adoption grows. As more brands scale up ATPU production, costs for these midsoles are likely to come down, which should make the technology even more common in mid-range trainers over the next couple of shoe cycles.
